Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the role performance of head teacher as
perceived by head teachers, deputy head teachers, heads of departments and the
teachers in management of secondary schools, with reference to Meru south district.
Despite the effort being put by the government in regard to establishing good
management of task areas by head teachers to provide quality education in the
country, this has not been fully achieved, especially in Meru south district.
This study tried to assess the role performance of the head teacher in the management
of the task areas, as perceived by head teachers, deputy head teachers, heads of
departments and teachers.
The objectives of this study were: to determine the performance of the head teacher's
effectiveness in the management of curriculum and instruction, finance and business,
staff and student personnel, school community relati~ns, physical and material
t.
resources and to assess the quality of role performance b~'head teachers as perceived
by head teachers, deputy head teachers, heads of department and teachers.
This study was confined within few sampled schools in Mwimbi division, Meru
South, Eastern province, due to its close proximity to the researcher and due to the
declining performance in KCSE in the past years. The study adopted descriptive
survey design, since it is concerned with the gathering of facts.
The study participants were sampled using purposive sampling technique, using the
criteria of boarding status and the type of the school (girls, boys and mixed). From the
sampled schools, the head teacher, deputy head teacher, heads of departments and
some teachers were selected·
schools perceived themselves as performing the tasks well, but the deputy head teachers,
heads of departments, and teachers perceived them as not performing them well. They
perceived them as not supervising the curriculum and instruction well,. don't involve
teachers and other stakeholders in budgeting and planning of physical facilities and lack
skills to supervise finance and business, staff and students personnel. Motivation of staff
personnel was perceived as the worst hit area.
Generally, the study established that the head teachers perceived themselves as
performing well, but deputy head teachers, heads of departments and teachers, perceived
them as not performing well. They were seen as performing some tasks better than others
in distinct and in unique ways. For example, the management of community relations was
the best performed while the management of staff personnel and curriculum and instruction
was the worst managed task.
