dc.description.abstractIn spite of the promise of Education for All (EFA) by 2015, the disadvantaged poor households still find it a challenge to finance their own education. While some learners do not access secondary school at all, there are some who join form one but drop out along the way due to cost related factors of schooling. The study aims at assessing the influence of direct costs of education on access and retention of students in public secondary schools in Laikipia East Sub- County, Kenya. The study was based on the following objectives: to determine the various direct costs of education and their influence on access and retention of learners in public secondary schools; to establish the rate of access and retention of students in public secondary schools; and to determine strategies enhancing access and retention of students in public secondary schools in Laikipia East Sub- County. Descriptive survey research design was adopted and the target population for study was 40 principals and 100 students in 40 public secondary schools in Laikipia East Sub-County. To get the actual sample size for the study, the researcher use stratified and proportionate random sampling where each zone was represented. The Sub County was stratified into four administrative zones. Schools within each zone were then stratified into the various categories i.e. boys boarding, girls boarding, and mixed day. The researcher then used purposive sampling techniques to get the actual respondents. Quantitative data was analyzed with the help of the Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS) while qualitative data was organized into thematic areas for easier interpretation. Inferences were made from particular data under each theme and conclusion drawn from the findings. The study recommends for student sponsorship through the available schemes, such as the CDF bursary to be increased to support more learners and their educational needs and programs such as the cash transfer programes offered for the poor can also be expanded to cater for those pursuing secondary level of education. The schools and communities should adopt information and communication techniques to foster participation of all stakeholders.en_US
