dc.description.abstract | This study assessed the status of the quality of the Arroket stream and Kipsonoi River waters in the upper part of Sondu River draining into Lake Victoria. It further evaluated the effects of Sotik Tea Factory effluents and runoff from the tea farms on the stream and river. This was done through assessment of Arroket stream water samples running across the farm and receiving tea factory effluents and of Kipsonoi River after being joined by the stream. The water samples were collected from 11 sampling stations. The water samples were collected between December 2004 and March 2005 and analysed for selected physical and chemical parameters. A total of eighty-eight samples were collected and analysed in addition to field measurements of selected parameters. The findings showed that the effluents from the tea factory, when compared to the stream levels, had high to very high concentrations of the several parameters measured: TSS; effluents 482-562mgL-1, upstream 78- 135mgL-1, downstreaml l5- 223mgL-1. Conductivity: effluents 184-189uScm-1, upstream 109110uScni-1, downstream 118-133uScm-1. Nitrates; N02N effluents 8.89- 10.87mgL-1 upstream 2.03- 2.70mgL-1 downstream 2.31-3.8mgL-'. N03N effluents 37-49mgL-1 upstream 7.3-13.1 mgL-1, downstream 9.5-16.5mgL-1. Total phosphates; effluents 5.26.4 mgL-l, upstream 0.07-0.21mgL-1, downstream 0.04-0.13mgL-1 Sulphates; effluents 9.7- 12.1mgL-', upstream 1.3-2.8mgL-', downstream 1.4-2.3 1ngL-1. Potassium; effluents 71.5- 78.7mgL-1, upstream 5.5-5.6 mgL_', downstream 5.5-5.7 mgL-1. Magnesium; effluents 4.3- 5mgL-1, upstream 1.1-1.4mgL-1, downstream 1.7- 2.4 mgL-1. Aluminium; effluents 1.71- 2.21mgL-1, upstream0.06-1.04 mgL-1, downstream 0.000.58mgL-1. Iron; effluents 2-2.6 mgL-1, upstream 2.6-3.6 mgL-1, downstream 2.6-2.7 mgL-'. BOD and COD). This may have affected the stream, which recorded slightly higher values in the downstream than upstream stations. The levels of DO effluents 7.1-7.6 upstream 8.0-8.3mgL-1 downstream 7.4-7.9mgL-1, pH effluents 6.6-7upstream 7.2-7.5 downstream7.1-7.5 and temperature effluents 23.8- 24.6°C upstream 24.626.1°C downstream 24.2- 25.1°C in the effluents did not seem to have influenced the quality of the stream water. The runoff effects from the farm were clearly visible. Higher levels of the parameters were recorded during rainy periods (December and March) during which great variations between the stations along the course were recorded. Nil values for copper were recorded in all stations while BOD and COD values were recorded in the effluent channel but had very low values in all other stations. | en_US |
