dc.description.abstractThe frequency of disasters has increased and the nature of these events has been changing in Kenyan schools making it cumbersome and complex to deal with them. Despite the efforts of the Ministry of Education Science and Technology (MoEST) to give guidelines and standards for safety, learning institutions are still facing disasters and this necessitated this study to examine disaster preparedness in public secondary schools in Matinyani Sub County. The study’s specific objectives were: identification of the main causes of disasters in public secondary schools, determining the level of awareness of Ministry of Education Science and Technology (MOEST), safety guidelines in schools, finding out the safety interventions which have been put in place to prevent occurrence of disasters in schools, and their sufficiency, and to find out major constraints a school management faces in implementing safety measures in schools. Herbert W. Heinrich’s Domino Theory was adopted in this study. A descriptive research design was adopted in which 12 public secondary schools were targeted. Eight schools were selected from the twelve schools which resulted in a sample of 8 school principals, 40 teachers, and 40 students amounting to a sample size of 88 respondents. The students were selected using simple random sampling whilst purposive sampling was used to select teachers and school principals. The data was collected using a structured questionnaire which was tested for reliability by conducting a pilot test from two schools in the population which were not included in the final sample. The data from the questionnaire was coded and analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) and was analysed by applying descriptive statistical procedures that consisted of frequency and percentages distributions. The findings of the study were presented in tables, pie charts, and graphs and supported by an interpretation from the researcher.en_US
