| dc.description.abstract | This study investigated the adoption and implementation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in academic libraries, focusing on the library of Kenyatta University. The purpose of the study was to examine the types of ICTs used in the library, the level and extent of their implementation, the challenges faced by students in utilizing these technologies, and the role of the library in facilitating effective ICT adoption to support learning and research. A descriptive survey research design was employed. The study targeted undergraduate students using the university library, from whom data were collected through structured questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques, including frequencies and percentages, and presented using tables and charts. The findings revealed that the library has implemented a variety of ICT tools, including computers, internet services, online public access catalogues (OPAC), electronic databases, and digital repositories. These technologies were found to enhance access to information resources, improve efficiency in service delivery, and support academic activities. However, the study also identified several challenges affecting effective utilization, including limited ICT infrastructure, slow internet connectivity, inadequate user training, insufficient computers relative to the student population, and occasional power interruptions. The results further indicated that while the level of ICT implementation in the library is moderate to high, the extent of adoption among students varies depending on their ICT literacy, awareness of available services, and ease of access. The library plays a significant role in promoting ICT adoption through provision of digital resources, user education programs, technical support, and facilitation of remote access to information. The study concludes that ICTs are critical in enhancing academic library services and supporting teaching, learning, and research. Nevertheless, sustained investment in infrastructure, user training, and system reliability is necessary to maximize their benefits. The study recommends increased funding for ICT development, expansion of internet bandwidth, continuous training for both students and staff, improvement of technical support services, and development of strategies to enhance awareness and utilization of digital resources. | |
