dc.description.abstract | The central focus in this research study was to assess factors affecting girls‟ performance in secondary schools in Rachuonyo South Sub County, Homa Bay County. The objectives of this study were to assess school quality and location, domestic chores, educational level of parents, parent occupation and family size, sexual behavior and their effects on girls‟ performance at school. The study was guided by reinforcement theory of motivation developed by B.F Skinner. The research design was descriptive survey. The target population constituted 1908 students from the 70 secondary schools both co-educational and pure girls‟ schools within the sub county. Purposive sampling was used to sample schools while simple random sampling was used to sample 200 students. Research instruments consisted of questionnaires, observation schedules, school information profile, and interview and focus group discussions. Piloting was done in three (3) schools drawn from three (3) divisions of the district. Data was analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The results of this study indicated that Home based factors and majorly parents‟ education level and occupation affect girls‟ performance in K.C.S.E. Engagement of girls in home chores is another detriment to their academic work because girls can not get extra time for personal studies and for doing home work resulting to poor performance in K.C.S.E. From the study, it emerged that family size directly influence girls performance as they are faced with many challenges such as being unable to acquire personal effects like sanitary towels, school fees, textbooks for personal reading, clothing, food and good shelter. Parents level of education and occupation affect girls for they don‟t have parents who are role models and the occupation of parents are of low income making it difficult to support the children. School quality and location affect girls seriously. Results also showed that sexual behavior affect girls‟ performance directly. The following conclusions were drawn from the findings that the economic status of the family has a great impact on the academic performance of girls. It is evident that the family income determines the girls‟ involvement in education. Girls‟ performance is also affected by the family size, large families make it harder for the parents to supervise the performance of their girls and even give necessary attention. This could lead to poor performance because of lack of basic requirements and motivation. From the findings, the study recommended that the government should provide funds to schools to improve the school quality and pay full school fees to retain girls in school. Schools need to strengthen guidance and counseling to help girls in their sexual behaviour. The government need to enhance sensitization on the importance of family planning for parents to give birth to children they can take care of without much constrains. Lastly, both the Government and parents should take immediate interventions to change the trends of girls‟ performance at K.C.S.E in Rachuonyo South Sub County | en_US |
