Challenges affecting tile relationship between primary schools and school communities in Juja Location, Thika District
Abstract
This research work was aimed at investigating the challenges encountered by
primary schools in relation to their surrounding community More specifically the
study focused on problems and challenges resulting from such relationship and how
these problems can be resolved by the headteachers.
The study was conducted in six pnmary schools and among community members
around them. The study sample included six headteachers, thirty-six teachers, one
zonal inspector of schools, twelve parents, and twelve committee members who were
randomly selected. All these gave a total of sixty-seven respondents.
The instruments used for data collection were Interview schedule for parents, school
committee members and zonal inspectors of school. Also a questionnaire for
head teachers and teachers were administered. Both structured and open-ended
questions were used.
Responses obtained from the five sources were analyzed by the researcher using
frequency and percentages. The study findings revealed that the main hindrance to
school Community relations was illiteracy among the community members, low
economic standards and lack of co-operation from parents to school activities'
