The impact of vocational training for rural development in Nyambene District (Kenya): a case study of Muthara Youth Polytechnic

This study was designed to investigate through an institutional descriptive case of Muthara Youth Polytechnic-Nyambene District, the role it has played in planning and developing her vocational/technical courses in training the youth, and its impact in the social-economic needs of Muthara community and the country Kenya. The researcher investigated that extent to which trainees of Muthara Youth polytechnics have been encouraged to utilize their training opportunities to market themselves within the local community. Consequently, the study sought to establish the future prospects of this institution as a local vocational training center in meeting the demands of the locals in the dynamic socio economic challenges. The literature review of this study addressed the positive relationship between education and development globally, narrowing down to Africa and eventually Kenya, and addressing the literature gaps that need to be filed. This study adopted a case study design. The methodology used is that of seeking rather than testing. The population of the study comprised Muthara Youth Polytechnic: manager, instructors, trainees, Board of Governors (BOG) and graduates of 2001-2004. Data was collected through questionnaires, interviews and observation schedules, which were administered personally by the researcher. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and results presented in percentages and tables. Qualitative data was organized into themes, categories and patterns pertinent to the study from which the researcher closely evaluated the usefulness of the information in answering research questions.
