Relationship between skills and performance of roles of public secondary school managers in Kitui County, Kenya
This study focuses on the relationship between skills and performance of role of managers in public secondary schools in Kitui County, Kenya. Majority of secondary school managers in Kenya have not been exposed to relevant training due to financing difficulties which can create a gap between the actual performance and the expected performance of the school managers. The study will be guided by four objectives: to assess the level of skills acquired in performance of management roles as perceived by school managers at a point of appointment in public secondary school; to assess the level of skills required in performance of management roles in public secondary as perceived by school managers; to evaluate the relationship between acquired skills of school managers and performance of their management role in public secondary school; to analyze the extent to which gender, age, professional qualification and school type predict level of skills required in performance of management roles. Correlational research design within the context of Ex-post facto research will be employed. The target population will be all public schools in Kitui County. Probability proportional to size sampling (PPS) technique will be used to ensure that the size of the sample drawn from each stratum will be proportionate to the relative size in relation to the target population. The schools will be stratified into national, county and sub-county. Census sampling technique will be used to pick the two national schools while simple random sampling will be used to sample 59 county and sub-county public secondary schools, bringing the total number to 61 schools. Two questionnaires will be used to collect data from the Board of Management and the Parents Association members while an interview schedule will be used to collect data from the principals. Descriptive as well as inferential statistics will be used to analyze data. Objective one and two will be analyzed using summated scores. Pearson correlation coefficients will be used to analyze objective three. For objective four, multiple regression will be performed. Content analysis will be applied for the open-ended questions. Meaningful themes from the transcripts will be identified from the interview.
