Home based factor influencing science skills achievement in pre-primary schools in Mumoni sub-county, Kitui county Kenya

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to conduct an investigation of home-based factors influencing science skills achievement in early childhood centres in Mumoni sub- county, Kitui County, Kenya. The objectives of the study are to: determine whether parent’s /guardian’s education level influences pre- school children science skills achievement ,investigate whether family income has an influence on pre- school children’s science skill achievement, establish whether parent’s marital status influence pre-school children science skills achievement to determine the influence of parent- children communication at home on pre-school children’s science skills achievement and to determine the influence of culture on pre- school children’s science skills achievement. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The target population in this study will be 11 648 subject comprising 154 early childhood teachers, 5747 parents and 5747 pre- school children. Stratified simple random sampling will be employed to select 15 teachers, 188 children and 188parents making a sample of 391.The study will collect data using questionnaires, interviews and observation. The research instrument will be examined by experts in the department of early childhood at Kenyatta University to evaluate content and construct validity. Before the actual data collection, a pilot study will be done. The data collected from the questionnaires will be cleaned, coded and entered in the computer for analysis using SPSS version 20 for window. Descriptive statistics will be used to analyze the quantitative data obtained. The statistics to be used will include frequency counts and percentages. On the other hand, qualitative analysis considering the inferences will be made from the opinions of the respondents from their free responses. This analysis will be thematically presented in narrative form and where possible tabular form. The results of data analysis will be present in frequency tables and figures. The finding of this study may have implications on school management to specifically to improve science learning among pre-school children
