(International Academic Journal of Arts and Humanities (IAJAH), 2025-06) Guyo, Gufu Wato; Moi, Edna Jemutai
The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of devolution on inter-communal conflicts in Marsabit County. The specific objectives were to explore the influence of county resource management on intercommunal conflicts, to examine the effect of county leadership composition on these conflicts, and to assess the role of peace building initiatives in mitigating intercommunal conflicts in Marsabit County. The study focused solely on Marsabit County, and its findings are relevant only within that context. The study was grounded in conflict theory and utilized a mixed-methods approach, combining both exploratory and correlational research designs. The target population included household heads, county government officials, administrative leaders, religious leaders, and individuals involved in peacebuilding efforts in Marsabit County. The sample consisted of 100 household heads. A questionnaire was used to gather data from household heads while data from key informants was gathered using interview guides. SPSS was utilized to analyse data collected using questionnaires. Descriptive analysis was applied to characterize the respondents and analyze their differing perceptions of devolution and its impact on inter-communal conflicts, using means and percentages. Inferential data analysis was conducted using Chisquare test. The quantitative results were presented in tables and figures. Data from interviews was analyzed using thematic analysis. From the analysis, there was statistically significant relationship between resource management policies and inter-communal conflicts in Marsabit County (χ2=8.723, P value=0.013). The findings imply that resource management practices significantly influence the occurrence of conflicts in Marsabit County. There was statistically significant relationship between county leadership composition and inter-communal conflicts in Marsabit County (χ2=11.952, P value=0.018). The findings suggest that the composition of county leadership influence the dynamics of inter-communal conflicts. The relationship between peace building initiative policies and inter-communal conflicts was statistically significant (χ2=10.678, P value=O.030). The findings imply that county peace building initiatives play a meaningful role in influencing the state of inter-communal relations. The findings offered rich insights that would create and implement policies both at the county and national level that will contribute to conflict resolution. It also greatly contributes to the literature on the role of devolution on inter-communal conflict

Influence of alternative justice system on resolution of disputes in Isiolo County, Kenya
(2024-12) Kiogora, Douglas Mutuma; Moi, Edna Jemutai
Many Kenyan communities rely on nonformal justice systems for fairness alongside established legal frameworks, but face several challenges. There are also concerns that some outcomes of these alternative systems may violate human rights and constitutional provisions. This research aimed to explore the impact of reconciliation, and mediation, on conflict resolution in Isiolo County, grounded in restorative justice theory. A descriptive research design was used, targeting a population of 1,600 individuals, including Borana elders, council members, residents, pastoralists, village elders, and the area chief, with a sample size of 160 (10% of the target population). Random and stratified sampling were applied, and both quantitative and qualitative data were collected through questionnaires and interviews. The data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), with both descriptive and inferential statistics, including correlation and regression analysis. The researcher obtained permits from relevant authorities, such as NACOSTI and the county director of education. Participants were informed about the study's purpose and guaranteed anonymity, privacy, and confidentiality, using pseudonyms when necessary. The findings indicated that alternative justice systems positively impact peace, relationship restoration, and conflict resolution. Community forums and facilitated dialogues helped individuals’ express grievances and collaboratively seek solutions. The study concluded that these systems enhance social cohesion, build trust, and prevent conflict escalation in Isiolo County. Involving community elders and the area chief in the resolution process further strengthens these systems. The study recommends that government agencies collaborate with community organizations and traditional leaders to promote awareness of reconciliation, mediation, and negotiation.

Influence of the Inua Jamii Program on the Welfare of Its Beneficiaries in Mvita Constituency, Mombasa County
(IAJAH, 2024-11) Mele, Mwanyuma Eddy; Moi, Edna Jemutai
Most countries, particularly developing nations, face high poverty levels, extreme hunger, and socio-economic vulnerability due to various factors. To address these issues, governments have introduced social protection programs, with a focus on cash transfer initiatives. These cash transfer programs aim to provide direct and regular payments to the poor and vulnerable, including people with disabilities, the elderly, and orphans, to meet their basic needs. The importance of the study was to determine the influence of the Inua Jamii Program on the welfare of its beneficiaries in Mvita Constituency, Mombasa County on three objectives that are overall health, financial independence and on social participation. The study was to aid in improving the social protection programs with the bigger role of reducing extreme poverty and high dependency rates and it is based on two theories which are theory for change and resilience theory. A sample size of 311 respondents was obtained from a target population of 1,394 of the people of Mvita who are beneficiaries of the Inua Jamii program. The data was collected using questionnaires and was analyzed using frequencies and percentages. Further, the study performed inferential analysis which involved the use of chi square and Multiple linear regression. A p value of 0.05 was used to determine if there is any statistical relationship between the parameters of the study. The study sought approval from graduate school in Kenyatta University and NACOSTI to conduct the study. The analysis spans descriptive and inferential methodologies, utilizing survey data and regression analysis to assess program outcomes. Key findings reveal significant positive impacts on financial assistance, security, and basic needs met, though challenges persist in social engagement and community integration. Comparative insights from global social support programs underscore opportunities for enhancement in financial literacy, social activity promotion, and inclusive community strategies. The Pearson ChiSquare value is 18.577 with 6 degrees of freedom and an asymptotic significance (2- sided) of 0.001, indicating a statistically significant relationship between the program's influence and the overall health of the elderly. The Inua Jamii program has notably improved financial independence among elderly beneficiaries in Mvita Constituency, evidenced by positive perceptions of financial assistance, security, and basic needs fulfillment. However, mixed responses regarding social engagement highlight areas for improvement. Drawing from successful global models, such as Brazil's Bolsa Família and India's social pension programs, enhancing financial literacy, expanding social activity opportunities, and fostering community inclusion could optimize program effectiveness. Addressing these aspects could further enhance the program's impact on the overall well-being of elderly beneficiaries. To enhance the Inua Jamii program's effectiveness, it is recommended to implement targeted strategies: Enhance Social Engagement: Develop comprehensive strategies to promote social activities and community involvement among elderly beneficiaries, ensuring inclusivity and meaningful participation. These steps align with global best practices and could significantly enhance the program's ability to support elderly beneficiaries' financial independence and overall well-being.

Men’s Contribution in Championing Women Leadership in Kenya: A Case Study of Nairobi County Assembly
(International Journal of Current Aspects, 2024) Ayoo, Edwine Collins; Moi, Edna Jemutai
This research project embarked on an analysis of men's historical contributions to championing women's leadership in Nairobi County, with a specific focus on the Nairobi County Assembly. The thesis hypothesized that meaningful contributions and advocacy by men could pave the way for achieving gender parity in political leadership. The primary objective was to scrutinize the efficacy of men's contributions in fortifying and sustaining women's leadership, prompted by the persistently low representation of women in political offices despite constitutional mandates like the one-third gender rule in Kenya. Informed by Social Identity Theory and Telic Theory, which shed light on shared identity dynamics and deliberate decision-making in influence and leadership, the study aimed to enhance the understanding of variables shaping the research questions. Methodologically, a comprehensive approach that amalgamated qualitative and quantitative methods was employed, drawing insights from primary and secondary sources. The study focused primarily on county assembly ward committees in Nairobi, the county government executive wing, the county assembly, the national gender commission, and two non-governmental organizations fervently advocating for women's leadership in Nairobi. Respondent selection adhered to a non-probability sampling technique, specifically utilizing a purposive sampling method. Descriptive statistical methods were applied for data processing and analysis. The findings highlighted the multifaceted nature of men's contributions, indicating varied levels of impact across different sectors. While some men played a pivotal role in fostering women's leadership, challenges and disparities persisted. In light of these findings, recommendations have been formulated to inform strategies and interventions aimed at strengthening women's participation and leadership within the intricate political landscape of Nairobi County. This study aspires to contribute to the broader discourse on achieving gender parity in political leadership, building upon the historical contributions and evolving dynamics of men's involvement in championing women's leadership.
