Item Mchango wa Mashairi ya Kiswahili katika Ukuzaji. wa Stadi ya Kuongea katika Shule za Upili, Kaunti ya Murang’a, Kenya(Kenyatta University, 2017-09) Macharia, Charles Gitonga; King'ei, Kitula Osore, MiriamKiswahili poems are a major component of the Kiswahili syllabus in secondary schools in Kenya. Kiswahili poems are taught as a section of literature from Form One to Form Four. The purpose of this research was to investigate the role of Kiswahili poems in the teaching and learning of Kiswahili speaking skills in Kangema Sub County, Murang'a County. The specific objectives were to establish the role of Kiswahili poems in the teaching and learning of speaking skills, to investigate the methods used by teachers to teach Kiswahili poems in enhancing the learners speaking skills, to establish the learners and teachers perceptions towards Kiswahili poems, to investigate the effects of those perceptions in the teaching and learning of Kiswahili speaking skills and to identify any challenges faced by teachers in the teaching of Kiswahili poems. The study used the dialogism theory advanced by Mikhail Mikhailovich, (1895- 1975). This theory is used to explain the relationship between pronunciation and the meaning of different statements. The study used a descriptive survey design. The target population was 25 schools, 1300 form 3 students, 77 teachers of Kiswahili, 25 principals and one Education Officer. The sample size was 30% of the total population, that is 8 schools, 390 students, 24 teachers, 9 principals and I Education Officer. Random sampling was used to select the students, stratified sampling to select schools and purposive sampling to select the education officer. Research instruments included student’s questionnaires, teachers and principals questionnaires, an observation checklist for the avalability of teaching and learning resources and an interview guide for the education officer. Data analysis was done according to the objectives of the research using the Scientific Package for Social Sciences method (SPSS). Positive responses were separated from negative responses using percentages. The results were presented using percentages, graphs, charts, tables and discussion. The findings of this research are that Kiswahili poems play a significant role in developing the speaking skills of learners. Learners should be involved more in reciting and chanting Kiswahili poems so that they can get used to the correct pronunciation.The research recommends that learners should be encouraged to participate in music festivals so that they can recite and chant Kiswahili poems, The Ministry of Education should add more lessons to Kiswahili so that time can be created for Kiswahili poems. This research is aimed at providing an alternative way to the teachers’, students, curriculum developers and other stakeholders in the education sector on how speaking skills can be learned and taught effectively using Kiswahili poetry.
