Item Community of Practice as an Imperative for Organizational Performance in the Context of Non-Governmental Organizations in Kiambu County, Kenya(RJI Reviewed Journal International of Education Practice, 2024) Kabera, Benedette Nduta; Kinyua, Godfrey MuigaiCommunity of practice has attracted attention as a way to spread knowledge and ultimately improving the performance of organizations. Government and private organization globally recognize the fundamental role of community of practice in fostering performance of companies hence attaining a competitive success in a dynamic market. Non-governmental organizations are a foundation upon which strategies for equality, economic and social development are anchored. However, studies have tended to focus on the relationship between non-governmental organizations and communities with few reflections on how internal non-governmental organizations dynamics contribute to their inefficiency and inept community impact. This study therefore sought to examine the extent to which community of practice is contributing to organizational performance and ultimately the quality of results and impact received by the community of non-governmental organizations work in Kiambu County, Kenya. The target population was 324 non-governmental organizations operating in Kiambu County. A sample of 179 program managers was selected using stratified sampling technique. Empirical data for the analysis were gathered using structured questionnaire. The validity and reliability of the data collection tool was assessed to confirm the suitability of the tool for use in the study. Descriptive analysis, and inferential analysis were conducted on the data set gathered from the field. The study established that community of practice have significant effects on organizational performance in non-governmental organizations working in Kiambu county. The study concluded that community of practice, significantly affected the organizational performance in non-governmental organizations working in Kiambu county. The study recommended that management of non-governmental organizations in Kiambu County should ensure that there is training for its employees in regard to incorporating lessons learned into normal work practices.Item Empirical Analysis of Core Competences and Performance of Star Rated Hotels in Nairobi City County, Kenya(International Journal of Humanities Social Sciences and Education, 2023) Kariuki, Jane; Kinyua, Godfrey Muigai; Waithaka, PaulThe hotel industry in developing world has been promoting economic growth and providing jobs. In the Kenyan context, there has been great variation in firm performance of hotels with some exhibiting exceptional performance and other performing miserably and others closing down. Although core competences have received attention equally scholarly and in practice, its effect on star rated hotels remains uncertain. Specifically the study determines the effect of customer focus competence on firm performance of star rated hotels in Nairobi City County, Kenya. Underpinning theory of study independent and dependent variables were resource-based view theory and balance score card model. The study utilized positivism philosophy. Descriptive and explanatory research design was used. Moreover, the study utilized multistage sampling and stratified sampling to select the respondent of the study. The target population was 112 star rated hotels in Nairobi City County with a sample sizes of 217 managers who were interviewed for the study. The study employed a semi-structured questionnaire to collect primary data. Content, construct, and criterion-related validity was tested, while the study reliability was assessed through a Cronbach alpha coefficient achieving a threshold at 0.749 that assured the reliability of the questionnaires. Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed to analyze data. Inferential analysis was used in investigating the direct effect of core competences and firm performance of star rated hotels Nairobi City County.Descriptive statistics used mean standard deviation to explain data characteristics and inferential statistics used regression in testing the effects of variables on firm’s performance. Qualitative data was analyzed using themes presented in narrative form. Findings were presented in form of tables and charts.The study illustrated that customer focus competence had a statistical significant effect on the Performance of star rated hotels in Nairobi city county, Kenya. The study revealed that customer focus competence was key in satisfying customers’ needs, attracting new customers, repeated purchase and increased profit. Consequently, customer focus competence was important in handling guest complaints with professionalism, providing better customer care service. In addition, activities related to managing customer problems, giving customers attention and customer services skills were applicable in the hotels. This means that managers should invest and put emphasis on customer focus in improvement n customer services and providing quality services as to a greater extent they are drivers of performance.Item Relationship between knowledge management and performance of Commercial banks in Kenya(Kenyatta University, 2014-10-03) Kinyua, Godfrey MuigaiThe knowledge-based view has identified innovative knowledge as what companies require to dominate an industry. Past studies have dealt with knowledge management too broadly without considering specific aspects of knowledge management, and this has led to a limited understanding of the extent of its effect on business performance, given that knowledge management as a concept is complex in nature. Even though companies have implemented knowledge management, they offer inconsistent support that it enhances firm's performance. Despite the focus given by scholarly work, the understanding of the influence of knowledge management on performance within organizations particularly commercial banks is still developing. It is against this background that this study seeks to establish the relationship between knowledge management and performance of Commercial Banks in Kenya. The specific research objectives include; to determine the influence of knowledge conversion on performance; to establish the influence of knowledge transfer on performance; to determine the effect of knowledge application on performance; to analyze the influence of firm's culture in the relationship between knowledge management and performance; and to examine the influence of human capital repository in the relationship between knowledge management and performance of commercial banks in Kenya. To achieve these objectives, the study has adopted explanatory and cross-sectional survey design. The target population of this study comprises all the 43 .commercial banks in Kenya. The unit of observation will be the functional areas of human resource, fmance, marketing, information communication technology, and operations in each bank. This study will use primary and secondary data. Primary data will be collected using a questionnaire with both open-ended and closed-ended questions. The questionnaire will be administered using the drop-and-pick later method. Secondary data will be used to validate information collected from the questionnaire. Quantitative data will be analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics will include percentages, frequencies, means, and standard deviations while . inferential statistics will include regression and correlation analysis. Results of quantitative . data analysis will be presented using figures and tables. Qualitative data with be analysed on the basis of common themes and will be presented in a narrative form.Item Relationship between knowledge management and performance of commercial banks in Kenya(Kenyatta University, 2015-10) Kinyua, Godfrey MuigaiThe knowledge-based view has identified innovative knowledge as what companies require to dominate in an industry. Past studies have dealt with knowledge management too broadly without considering specific aspects of knowledge management which has led to a limited level of understanding on the extent to which the comprehensive nature of knowledge management has influenced firms' performance. Even though some companies have implemented knowledge management, there is no conclusive empirical evidence on the influence of knowledge management on performance. It has been noted that performance of Commercial Banks suffer because knowledge is hoarded in scattered silos, fragmented by division, department, region and a host of other organizational factors such as culture, processes and management style. It is against this background that this study sought to investigate the relationship between knowledge management and performance of Commercial Banks in Kenya. The specific objectives of the study sought to determine the relationship between knowledge conversion and performance; to establish the relationship between knowledge transfer and performance; to determine the relationship between knowledge application and performance; to establish the mediating effect of human capital repository on the relationship between knowledge management and performance; and to determine the. moderating effect of firm's culture on the relationship between knowledge management and performance of Commercial Banks in Kenya. To achieve these objectives, the study adopted explanatory and cross-sectional survey design. The target population of this study comprised of all the forty three Commercial Banks in Kenya. The unit of observation was the functional area in each bank, whereas the unit of analysis was Commercial Bank. Five functional areas were identified in each bank comprising human resource, finance, marketing, information communication technology, and operations. This study used primary and secondary data. Primary data was collected using a semistructured questionnaire. The questionnaire was administered using drop-and-pick later method. Secondary data was collected using document review and was used to validate information collected through the questionnaire. The response rate in this study was approximately seventy three percent which was considered sufficient for making inferences and drawing conclusions. Quantitative data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics was used to summarise the survey data and included percentages, frequencies, means, and standard deviations. However, inferential statistics involved regression analysis and was used for testing hypotheses and drawing conclusion. Results from quantitative data analysis were presented using figures and tables. Qualitative data was analysed on the basis of common themes and presented in narrative form. The findings of the study established that knowledge management positively influence performance. Moreover, knowledge conversion, knowledge transfer and knowledge application were found to be statistically significant. Human capital repository was found to partially mediate the relationship between knowledge management and performance. Furthermore, the findings also revealed that firm's culture moderates the relationship between knowledge management and performance. Management of Commercial Banks can use these findings to enhance utilization of organization's knowledge base and firm's absorptive capacity. This implies that hotels are required to develop a strategy to deal with stiff competition. The implication is that the hotels should advance a strategy in dealing with environmental turbulences.
