Item Management of institutional resources as determinants of quality of education in selected private universities in Kenya(Kenyatta University, 2025-07) Githaiga, Beth NdutaManagement of institutional resources plays a crucial role in promoting educational quality in institutions of higher learning. However, the education quality offered in private universities in Kenya is still low. Few students complete their education whereas a few manage to graduate with quality grades from private universities. Hence, the main aim of this research was to examine the effects of management of institutional resources on quality of education in Kenyan private universities. The objectives were; to determine how management of curriculum support materials, physical resources, human resources and time resources influence quality of education in private universities. This research was anchored on the Resource-Based View theory, using a mixed methods research design. This research targeted all the 36 private universities in Kenya, with the target respondents being 173 deans of schools, 510 heads of departments and 1156 lecturers. From the sampled universities, 121 deans of schools, 220 departmental heads and 297 lecturers were selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires for lecturers and interview guides for deans of schools and heads of departments. Piloting was done on 64 respondents from two private universities to ascertain validity and reliability. Qualitative data was analyzed thematically from the study objectives and presented in narrative forms. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as percentages and frequencies. Inferential analysis was also undertaken using Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Analysis. The study found that quality of education in private universities is low as reflected in low number of students who graduate with first-class and second-class upper division, low completion rates and infrequent participation in co-curricular activities. This is attributed to ineffective management of institutional resources. The study found that provision of curriculum support materials is inadequate. On physical facilities, the study found that only a few private universities have conducive and spacious lecture halls, well-stocked libraries, safe and well-maintained playgrounds, comfortable furniture for students and teachers, conducive faculty offices spacious dining halls and well-ventilated toilets. On human resources, the study found that many lecturers are not well-remunerated, staffs are rarely promoted, few undergo proficiency training, do not have a friendly insurance medical cover nor do they have access to 24-hour internet connectivity. Struggling with time management poses a perpetual challenge, particularly when it comes to coordinating academic schedules and extracurricular commitments within university programs. The constant battle to allocate time effectively makes it daunting to cover the entirety of the syllabus while still actively engaging in co-curricular pursuits. The study found that there were significant correlations between the independent variables (management of curriculum support materials, management of physical facilities, management of human resources, & time management) and quality of education in private universities. This study therefore concludes that management of institutional resources is a significant determinant of education quality in Kenyan private universities. The recommendations of the study are that management of private universities should ensure continuous provision of adequate curriculum support materials and physical facilities for realization of quality Education
