Item Enhancing Quality in Education: Stakeholders’ perceptions of malpractices in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary School Examination(Kenyatta University, 2015-05) Akondo, J. O.Examination malpractice has become a global phenomenon. In different countries of the world today, developed and developing, academic dishonesty especially cheating in examinations is on the increase. Given the importance of the examinations in Kenya, candidates have invented new tricks of cheating in order to pass the examinations. Parents and teachers are equally involved in the examination malpractices and go to any length to commit examination irregularities. Some parents facilitate cheating by giving money to their children to buy examination papers. They also buy them mobile phones that they can use in sending and receiving messages on examination questions ahead of the start of examinations. In some schools, head teachers organize for impersonation to assist some candidates by paying university students or former KCSE candidates who performed well to re-sit the exam on behalf of weak students so as to boost their school’s performance index. Based on a review of available literature, this paper discusses examination malpractices and makes recommendations on how the vice can be reduced.
