Strategic Management Practices and Performance of Kenya Airways Limited in Nairobi City County, Kenya

In Kenya Airways Limited, there has been issues of poor performance in terms of decreased profits, reduced number of passengers, reduced market share, increased operating costs and reduced craft movements has been an issuc. In addition, despite adopting different strategic management practices such as strategic planning, leadership, implementation and control, it is yet established how these have affected performance of Kenya Airways Limited. Hence, the main objective was to examine the effect of strategic management practices on performance of Kenya Airways Limited in Nairobi County, Kenya. The specific objectives included: to assess strategic planning effect on the performance of Kenya Airways Limited; 10 establish the strategic leadership effect on the performance of Kenya Airways Limited; to establish the effect of strategic implementation on the performance of Kenya Airways Limited and to determine the strategic control effect on the performance of Kenya Airways Limited. The theories supporting the study included resource-based view, levers of control theory and balanced score card. The study employed descriptive research designs. The targeted population was 388 managerial staff drawn from departments at Kenya Airways Limited. The sample size of 143 participants were chosen by use of proportionate random sampling. This ensured that every respondent was given a chance to be included in the sampled population. The researcher utilized a combination of questionnaires and interviews for collecting the primary data. Pilot study for testing validity and reliability of research tools were conducted at Jambojet Limited where 14 questionnaires were distributed. The questionnaires were administered either online or in person and can be completed in about 30 minutes. Analysis of qualitative data was though thematic analysis. Quantitative data analysis was through use of descriptives and inferential statistic. The study conducted diagnostic tests including normality test, heteroscedasticity, autocorrelation and multicollinearity test. Presentation of findings was in figures and tables. The study established that strategic planning has a strong effect on Kenya Airways performance ($=0.677; p=0.000). It was established that strategic leadership has a strong effect on Kenya Airways performance ($=0.609; p=0.000). The study also established that strategic implementation has a strong effect on Kenya Airways performance (B=0.650; p=0.000). The study further found that strategic control has a strong effect on Kenya Airways performance ($=0.751; p=0.000). The conclusion of the study was that strategic planning, strategic leadership, strategic implementation and strategic control has a significant effect on the performance of Kenya Airways Limited, Kenya. The study recommends that the management at Kenya Airways Limited needs to ensure that there is regular review of strategic plans to meet the strategic and financial needs. Further, the management at Kenya Airways Limited needs to make sure that KQ embraces innovation and modem technology to streamline operations, improve communication, and enhance safety. The study also recommends that management at Kenya Airways Limited needs to establish various communication channels for effective communication of strategic implementation to all employees and stakeholders.

Micro Finance Institutions Services and Performance of Restaurants in Mombasa County, Kenya

The expansion of the economy depends on the availability of financial services, notably credit and savings options. As a result, Kenya's economy has not grown and developed as expected as a result of MSMEs. Medium and Small entities encounter several weaknesses that hinder their potential usefulness towards long-term sustainability of the economy. The lack of credit services is one of these concerns. The efforts of microfinance institutions to make their services available to small and medium-sized businesses that have not profited from the traditional formal banking system have been recognized as a result of the growth and expansion of SMEs. Because of this, the researcher evaluates how microfinance scrvices affect the performance of restaurants in Mombasa's core business district. Researchers hope to learn how microfinance training affects the performance of Mombasa CBD restaurants; how the regulatory framework for microfinance affects Mombasa CBD restaurants; whether access to credit affects Mombasa CBD restaurant performance; and the impact of microfinance credit cost on Mombasa CBD restaurant performance. The study was based on Balance Scorecard theory, Resource-based theory, Pecking order theory Credit Access theory and Management theory. A descriptive survey design was used in this investigation for restaurants over seven years and above. 114 people who ~ worked at the selected restaurants in Mombasa's core business centre were selected whereby, 57 of whom were managers and 57 were waiters. The study used the descriptive survey approach, in which all employees were included. The study data was through questionnaires. Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Version 25 for Windows was used for data analysis. In order to get the most accurate results, the study involved use of variety of statistical methods such as means, frequency tables, percentages, standard deviations correlation and regression.The study found that training and microfinance regulatory framework indicated an insignificant relationship with performance of restaurants in Mombasa County however access to microfinance credit and microfinance credit cost indicated a positive significant relationship with performance by SMEs in Mombasa County. The study concluded that Owners of businesses can benefit from training in the form of expanded professional networks, the transfer of technology, the formation of new businesses, and the acquisition of superior management practices. Business success and continued operation depend on the availability of debt financing. However, MFIs are hesitant to lend to SMEs because they are seen as higher risks and SMEs typically do not have collateral to back up their loans. The study also concludes that the amount of the loan is a crucial factor in microfinance lending since it affects the overall cost of financial intermediation. The study recommends that Microfinance institutions should continue training restaurant owners on financial management for the purposes of sustaining enterprises. This will create better understanding on how to manage their funds more efficiently and-effectively. In order to make it easier MFIs to have favorable financial performance, the institutions ought to adopt methods that will make it easier for MFIs to have improved liquidity. This will allow the institutions to be more efficient in their financial operations. The study also recommends that microfinance institutions and policymakers should think about incorporating an affordable micro-insurance plan as part of the microfinance package for all its clients who seek for loans. Small and medium-sized enterprise management should be more proactive in approaching MFIs to analyze their business progress and share their current needs and concerns.

Enablers of Women's Participation in Self-Help Groups in Kiambu County, Kenya

Women are increasingly using Self-Help Groups as a strategy for transforming their social and economic lives through their active participation. The main aim of this study was to find out the factors that enable women to take part in SHGs in Ndenderu Ward of Kiambu County. Particularly, the researcher explored the role of family, self- fulfillment and financial factors in enhancing the degree of willingness for women to take part in SHGs. The research employed a cross-sectional descriptive survey design and a mixed methods approach which made use of both quantitative and qualitative data. The target population included women members of SHGs which have been registered and are located in Ndenderu Ward. The study sample was drawn from a total number of 30 registered SHGs. The sample size of 6 SHGs was identified using a simple random sampling technique and 20 respondents picked from each group thus making a sample size of 120 respondents for the survey. Other key informants included the leaders of the selected SHGs and the Ward Development Officer. The data was collected using structured questionnaire together with an interview schedule. The validity and reliability of data collection instruments was established before commencing data collection. The tool for quantitative analysis that was used was that of SPSS data analysis tool that enables statiscians to describe quantitative data in a descriptive way. On the other hand, content analysis was used in analysing qualitative data. The study findings were presented by using measures of central tendency where the measures were presented using tables and bar charts. The study was also guided by ethical values and principles and followed the guidelines provided by Kenyatta University Graduate School. According to the findings, family factors are not an important determinant of women’s participation in the SHGs in Kiambu County. Self-fulfillment and financial factors played a significant role in the determination of women’s participation in SHGs in Kiambu. The study recommended that researchers and community practitioners should conduct a survey to establish other critical determinants other than family factors since these were found not to have any effect on the participation of women in SHGs. The SHGs should add more emphasis on ensuring the support for the self-fulfilment factors as well as the financial factors that have been examined in the study since they were found to play a significant role in the participation of women in SHGs in Kiambu County. The Kiambu County government should also play an active role in the growth of SHGs by developing policies that will promote their expansion especially through administrative support, training, proper coordination and effective monitoring of their performance.

Challenges Faced By Adolescents with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders in Accessing Transition Services at Kakamega Rehabilitation Centre, Kakamega County, Kenya

The study used a lottery method to select the sample size of 30% of the target population, Theretore, the study sample comprised Af 123 rehabilitees, 15 rehabilitators and | manager making a total of 141 respondents. The stady enployed stratitiod method to select rehabilitators, simple random technique was usad o selevt the rehabilitees while purposive sampling technique to select the manager, The semisstructurad fnterview guide for the manager, questionnaires for both rehabilitators and rehabilitees and observation cheek-list tor resources were used as rosearch instruments. Piloting of the instruments was done at Shikusa rehabilitation Centre. A case study research design was used in the study, Data from objectives were analysad both quantitatively and qualitatively. Descriptive statistics for - example froquency tables and percentages sum up information measurably from the closed-ended items. The analysad quantitative data was presented using frequency tables, pie charts and graphs while qualitative data from manager's semi- structured interview schedule was summarizad thematically and namated in texts. The findings indicated that adolescents with EBD emotional related to excess use of drugs and substance abuse, neglectad and discriminated, stealing and robbery, withdrawal, being out of parents’ control, depression, drug trafticking, gang violence, rape and defilement were eligible to aocess transition services. The main material resources available were playing field, workshops, dommitories, building and construction tools, carpentry tools, classrooms, poultry apparatus, and teaching and leaming materials. Guidance and counselling were the main type of transition service provided to the adolescents with EBD. The study concludes that inadequate human and material resources led to poor delivery of transition services. The study recommends that service providers at the Centre need to help the adolescents to achieve greater sense of independence, personal responsibility, setting goals, making choices, and understanding their responsibilities which would enhance their self-determination. There is also need to train them on skills such as: effective communication skills: negotiation and conflict resolution; being assertive; and inter- personal problem solving. There is need for the government to implement strict measures that would ensure that juvenile acts are monitored and youths are protected from any hm:m. Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development should come up with guidelines on effective ways of managing leamers with behaviour disorders while they are still in early childhood stage.
