Abstract
The study aimed at assessmg the challenges facing the Boards of
-""--. r
Governors (BoG) in management of schools in Nkuene Division of
Meru Central District.
The study found out that there was gender imbalance favouring
males in the BoG., with mature members all being above 30 years of
age. Majority of members were of form four education level.
However, majority of the members faced challenges as they had not
read the important legal documents like education Act, T.S.C. Act,
BoG management guide, among others. Ninety seven percent of the
BoG members had not received any formal training or induction
pertaining their expected roles, an aspect that make it difficult for
them to makes decisions.
The findings also reveal that the BoG nomination panel was wanting
as there is a lot of political manipulation, and more to that, important
stakeholders such as teachers, students and NGO's were left out.
Main challenges eminating from other offices like MoEST"
headquarter, T.S.C., DEO's are among hindering forces in their
working programme challenges like poor financial management,
human resource management, supervision of physical structures,
discipline of staff and students, and poor academic achievement,
results from low quality of members appointed as some are of low
academic level, old age, overstaying in one BoG, serving in many
school boards, having personal interests in school, among others.
Not only has this study unearthed a number of management
challenges faced by BoG's in Nkuene division, but also put forward a
number of suggestions and recommendations which include,
restructuring the nomination panel, to bring more parents and
educationists, on board, setting age limit to the boards, number of
schools one should serve as a member at a time, including teachers
and students to BoGs and above all empowering BoGs and DEB's to
deal with emerging challenges.
