Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate factors that influence implementation ofKIEP programmes for primary school pupils with visual impairments. Two schoolswere selected out of the five schools implementing integrated programmes in Nairobiand Kitui counties due to large population of pupils with visual impairments in theseschools from which a sample was drawn. These schools were Kilimani primary schoolin Nairobi County and Muslim primary school in Kitui County. The study utilized adescriptive survey research design. The target population was 503 respondents while thesample population was 139 respondents. The respondents comprised pupils with visualimpairment, sighted pupils, teachers, head teachers and ministry of education officers.Sampling techniques employed included purposive sampling and random samplingby lottery. Questionnaires, interview schedules and observation schedules were used inthe study. For reliability purposes, the research used split-half technique for assessing reliability. Validity was ensured through construct and coplent validity. Data collected was coded and analyzed using statistical package for social science programme. The studyestablished that specialist curriculum for the VI in the area of training in use oflow vision devices, orientation and mobility was not receiving due recognition, as it was not timetabled in the school master time-table. Further, the study indicated that lack of adequatebraille materials adversely affected the programme. However, community participation atvarious levels, as well as acceptance of students with visual impairment by their sightedpeers positively influenced KIEP programs. The study recommended the establishmentof more resource centers by the ministry of education where these programmes exist andNGOs intervention in complementing the government's efforts especially in organizing fortransport services for these children.
