Abstract
School principals play a major role in education leadership and Kenya. The main fundamental Administration roles shown on the literature review show that school principals' face challenges in school administration due to inadequate training in management skills. This is particularly so because it seems there is no pre-service training course for aspiring school principals do not have a follow up programme on whether they attend any in-service, course, workshops and seminars, in management skills. That means those who lack self-motivation never attend the courses, offered by Kenya Education staff Institute, (KESI). The objectives of the study is to investigate the awareness of management skills among secondary school principals and to further investigate the use of and effect of the acquired management skills in the attempt of the school principals to deal with administrative challenges that face, especially in executing the six administrative tasks. That sample frame size and sampling design have been selected systematically to adequately cover the different categories of secondary schools, and fair coverage of Machakos District. Gender has been considered by categorizing boys and girls schools and male female school principals respectively. The Research instruments try to investigate into length the administrative problems in each of the six tasks with relationship to the awareness of the managerial skills of the secondary school principals. Further investigation shows the suggestions of the school principals on the type of course which they feel are necessary to make school management; they give recommendations towards what they feel is the best way to train and further Develop and enhance acquisition of managerial skills by all secondary school principals in all levels of school administration. The findings of the research should help the Ministry of Education and the Teachers Service Commission to restructure and intensify management-training skills for school heads. The acquisition of management skills will make them more effective and efficient in performing the six main administrations tasks in school management.
