Abstract
Strategic capabilities are the company's ability to develop and/or expand basic capabilities in response to changing circumstances. The general objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between strategic capabilities and business competitiveness in commercial banks in Laikipia County, Kenya. The specific objectives was to determine the effect of leadership development, talent management, change management and knowledge management on business competitiveness in commercial banks in Laikipia County, Kenya. The study was anchored on the resource based view theory, knowledge based view theory and Dynamic capabilities theory all of which are relevant in this study. This study adopted a cross sectional descriptive survey design. The target population of this study comprised all the commercial banks branches in Laikipia county. The 19 branch managers and 19 operations managers of the commercial banks in Laikipia county are involved in the implementation and management of strategic capabilities. The study used census approach due to the small number of the target population. Quantitative data was examined using descriptive statistics and displayed as percentages, means, and frequencies using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21. The findings indicated that leadership programs focus on the growth of high potential personnel and the banks have a strong management team of our organization. The banks guarantees strong leadership, there is a list of possible leadership candidates in the banks file and both branch and operations manager are routinely updated of score of every employee. The study results presents that the bank branches contacted have a talent strategy, which guides the banks in the way it acquires, develops and retains its personnel. The findings clearly indicates that if businesses want to build winning teams of brilliant people, talent management is essential. The results on change management indicated that majority of the bank’s branches contacted adopted diversification, focus and differentiation strategies as the change management strategies. The results also indicated that knowledge identification helps the experienced bank employees to share and more effectively implement the existing knowledge. The study concluded that leadership development, talent management, change management and knowledge management had a positive significant effect on business competitiveness. The study recommended that bank managers should develop a work climate that encourages active conversation and interchange among team members.The directors in the banks must be nimble and willing to make quick decisions, and those who can do so will be exposed to a lot of change in a short amount of time. This shift could be bank-wide or team-specific, and it could result from a variety of variables, including technology, internal operating demands, money, and politics.
