Abstract
Human resource is considered as the backbone of all organizations in the service industries and in the manufacturing/production industries. Therefore, Human Resource policies are an essential aspect in social organizations as they guide employee satisfaction, development, motivation and commitment. However, due to globalization, scarcity of skilled labor and economic development, most organizations including the corporative societies have been having challenges in retaining their employees. More specifically, Githunguri dairy farmers’ cooperative society limited has generally experienced an increase in employees’ turnover in the last five years. Therefore, this study sought to investigate the effect of HR policies and turnover of employees in dairy cooperative societies in Kenya. Additionally, the researcher determined influence of compensation policy, training and development policy, staff promotion policy and workplace safety policy on employee turnover in Kenya dairy cooperative societies. The researcher employed descriptive research approach. Target population was the total 380 staffs in finance/accounting, human resource, milk collection, sales and marketing, processing and distribution departments in Githunguri Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society Limited. Stratified random sampling technique was employed to pick 194 employees as sample size from target population. Semi-structured questionnaires were utilized to acquire primary data which was employed in the study. Both qualitative as well as quantitative data was generated by the research instrument. Results were then displayed in prose form. Inferential and statistical statistics were employed in quantitative data analysis with support of SPSS version 22. Qualitative data from open ended questions were thematically coded and content analysis was employed to analyze it. Descriptive statistics comprised of percentages, frequency distribution, standard deviation and mean. Graphs and tables were employed to display the results. In addition, the association between study variables was determined using both regression and also correlation analysis. Findings indicated that compensation policy has an inverse and significant effect on employee turnover in dairy cooperative societies in Kenya. In addition, the study revealed that training and development policy has an inverse and significant effect on employee turnover in dairy cooperative societies in Kenya. The researcher found that employee promotion policy has influences employee turnover in dairy cooperative societies significantly and positively. In addition, workplace safety policy has significant positive impact on employee turnover in Kenya dairy cooperative societies. Therefore, the study recommends review of the compensation policy to make sure that the salaries given to employees match with those given by other organizations in the same industry. In addition, the management of dairy cooperative societies in Kenya should start offering scholarships to their employees so as to increase their skills and competence. Further, the management of dairy cooperative societies in Kenya should ensure that all employees have equal opportunities for job promotion after a specific duration of time or after skills and competence improvement. Also, the management of dairy cooperative societies in Kenya should invest more in making sure that staff trainings are carried regularly and frequently.
