The study helps us understand the role of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority and examines how the citizen oversight body monitors police performance to ensure effectiveness and professionalism among police officers. The objectives of the study were to establish whether the measures used by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority had influenced work performance in the National Police service; examine the effectiveness of strategies that the Independent Policing Oversight Authority uses to ensure the work performance of police officers; analyze how Independent Police Oversight Authority has promoted accountability among police officers in National Police Service; and assess the relationship between Independent Police Oversight Authority and National police service. The structural functionalism theory was used to structure and inform the study. A cross-sectional survey design was used to collect data from a sample of 98 participants. Out of the 98 participants, 83 were drawn members of the inspectorate and officers of other ranks. This sample was determined through the Yamane formula. Proportionate sampling was used to select the sample of 83. Key informants included ten gazetted officers and 15 Independent Police Oversight Authority staff who were selected purposively. The instruments of data collection included questionnaires and interview questions. Quantitative data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and presented in tabular form by use of the SPSS software, while qualitative data was analyzed through theme identification. The study established that the existence of the Independent Police Oversight Authority enhanced performance by holding the police accountable for their actions. Another key finding was that there were effective measures to enhance police performance. However, it emerged that monitoring the police by the Independent Police Oversight Authority was ineffective and that Independent Police Oversight Authority has challenges in improving the relationship between Independent Police Oversight Authority and the National police service.enIndependent PolicingIndependent Policing Oversight AuthorityPoliceStarehe Police DivisionNairobi City CountyKenyaEffectiveness of Independent Policing Oversight Authority in Enhancing Police Performance in Starehe Police Division, Nairobi City County, KenyaThesis
