The LB 1731 .K32 2012Despite the critical role attached to TACs in terms of teachers' professional growth and development, the TACs seem to be fraught with challenges especially related to capacity building. The purpose of the study was to assess the challenges facing the TACs in inservice education of primary school teachers in Murang'a South District. The objectives of the study were to: assess how adequacy of resources affects the role of TACs in inservice teacher education of primary school teachers in Murang' a South District; find the effects of human resource capacity on the role of TACs in in-service teacher education of primary school teachers; examine how teacher attitudes affect the role of TACs in inservice teacher education of primary school teachers; investigate the effects of leadership support on the role of TACs in in-service teacher education of primary school teachers; and suggest possible solutions to the challenges faced by the TACs in in-service teacher education of primary school teachers in Murang'a South District. The study was guided by the Systems Theory. The study adopted a descriptive survey design to target all the 779 teachers from the 68 public primary schools in Murang'a South District. The researcher sampled 18 schools to participate in the actual study. Simple random sampling was used to select 90 teachers (5 per school). Four (4) TAC tutors, one (1) DQASO and the area DEO participated in the study giving a total of 96 participants. Questionnaires for teachers and TAC tutors and interview schedules for the DQASO and the DEO were used as the main tools for data collection. Prior to the actual data collection procedure a pilot study was conducted in three schools that were not included in the actual sample. The pilot study enabled the researcher to improve reliability of the instruments, and familiarize himself with the data collection process.Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the quantitative data obtained. The statistics used included frequency counts, means, and percentages. On the other hand, qualitative analysis considered the inferences that were made from the opinions of the respondents. This analysis was thematically presented in narrative form and where possible in tabular form. The results of data analysis were presented in frequency tables, bar graphs and pie charts. The study established that teachers were underutilizing TAC centres. It was established that TACs were ill equipped with in-service training resources and this undermined their effectiveness to offer in-service training. The study also established that teachers had positive attitude towards in-service training despite their failure to utilize service offered in the centres. It was further established that lack of enough TAC tutors, lack of commitment from the TAC tutors and de-motivation of TAC tutors negatively affected offering of In-service training in the TACs. The study recommends that; the MOE should provide adequate financial resources, equipment and facilities such as computers, stationery and furniture to the TACs; the MOE should sensitize teachers on the use of TACs as majority of the teachers lack information on the use of TAC centers leading to low number of teachers turning up for consultation.; among other recommendations.enTeachers --In service training --Kenya --Murang'a SouthTeacher --Training of --Kenya --Murang'a SouthChallenges facing teacher advisory centres in offering in service teacher education in Murang'a South district, Murang'a CountyThesis
