Abstract
The rising global population and poverty level have resulted to expanded expectations from nonprofit organisations. Even though nonprofits have been able to reach 250 million people through the provision of food and community development, leadership wrangles and corruption evidenced in the misuse of funds have affected the beneficiaries where projects have not been completed in time. The study investigated transformational leadership and performance of Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar, Nairobi, Kenya. Specific objectives of this study were; to establish how idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation and to assess how individualized consideration affect performance of Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar, Nairobi, Kenya. The theories that guided the study were trait theory, general systems theory and balance score card. Descriptive research design was used. The target population consisted of 50 employees who were all included in the study. Data was collected using both primary and secondary methods. Validity and reliability were checked where Cronbach’s Alpha value was 0.8 hence considered acceptable for analysis. Pilot study, face validity and content validity helped in improving the originality of the instrument. Data was analysed using quantitative and inferential statistics with the aid of SPSS. Ethical consideration was upheld. Reports were generated using tables, figures, mean, standard deviation and percentages. All the four independent variables were positively related to organisational performance. However, idealized influence and intellectual stimulation did not have significant effect on organisational performance. It was also established that inspirational motivation had the greatest significant contribution to organisational performance at 0.704 followed by individualized consideration at 0.372. It was recommended that the leadership improve communication of the vision to allow buy-in by employees, adopt systems theory application to accommodate all employees in decision making regarding their work and involve all team members. The study also recommended an open-door policy to allow freedom of expression on issues employees felt were touching their work as well as appreciating individual needs of the members. The study recommended that future research be considered outside nonprofit, the use of other variables such as democratic leadership, transactional and charismatic to determine how they affect organisational performance. Furthermore, organisations may be involved to allow generalization into other populations.
