Abstract
Despite the pertinent role of strategic innovation research in strategic management literature, little is understood on the link between strategic innovations and the performance of the universities. Constraints associated with the measurement of the strategic innovation constructs, methodological uncertainties and controversial findings from the previous studies formed the basis of this study. This study sought to investigate the influence of strategic innovations on performance of the public universities in Kenya. The specific objectives were to ascertain the impact of organizational, marketing, product and technological innovations on performance of the of the public universities in Kenya. The resource-based, disruptive innovation, transformative leadership, system theories as well as the balanced scorecard model were utilized in this study. A cross-sectional research design was adopted. The target population of this study was 31 public universities operating in Kenya. The sample frame of this study were 10 public universities. 100 responders from the population were chosen. Respondents from the 10 public universities operating in Kenya were chosen using a stratified random sampling technique. The sample size for the 80 respondents was determined using the Israel (2009) formula. Primary data was acquired using structured questionnaires with closed and open-ended questions. The items of the questionnaires were evaluated using a Likert-type scale. The respondents of this study were drawn from the management and administrative staff of the public universities in Kenya. The respondents of the study included the deputy vice chancellors, directors, deputy directors, managers and senior administrators. The validity of the research instrument was assessed through university scholars and industry experts while Cronbach Alpha coefficients was utilized to test the reliability of the research instrument. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and linear regression method and displayed in form of Tables and Figures. The study established that positive significant link between the four predictor variables and performance of public universities in Kenya. Organizational innovations (F, 41,247= 57.8, p < 0.000), marketing innovations (F, 13.68 = 29.3, p < 0.001), product innovations (F, 64.0 = 59.9, p < 0.000) and technological innovations (F, 54.0 = 49.3, p < 0.000). The study concluded that performance of public universities can effectively explained by organizational, marketing, product and technological innovations. The study recommends that for enhanced performance of public universities in Kenya, rethinking strategic innovations is inevitable. The information from this study is deduced to be of significant value to theory, managerial practice and policy makers such as the Commission for University Education and the ministry of education in Kenya.
