Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder arising from deficiency of insulin by the pancreas or by
the ineffectiveness of the insulin produced in the target cells. It is characterized by high levels of glucose in blood, which in turn damages many of the body systems particularly the blood vessels and nerves. This review explores the metabolic complications accompanying diabetes mellitus. It also provides a discussion of the pathogenesis of the complications of the disease.
