dc.description.abstractEducation has an indisputable positive bearing on economic growth and poverty reducing. In particular, secondary educating is important as it constitutes an investment in education that yields considerable social and private returns. Core to the teaching/learning in secondary school are physical and material resources. Physical facilities provide necessary conditions necessary in the school hence have the potential to enhance or to undermine the learning process. These resources need to be comfortable, healthful, safe and secure. Material resources are important for the curriculum delivery. The initials provision of the resources under the cost sharing strategies as outlined in the sessional paper No. 6 of 1988 on Education and manpower Training for the Next Decade and Beyond involves parents and communities. Since introduced of FSE in 2008, the government provides tuition fee which caters for material resourses in secondary schools in kenyenya division, Gucha district. Management involves selection, design, procurement, utilization and maintenance of the resources. The study is useful to parents, teachers, headteachers and other policy makers on issues about management of physical and material resourses. The study employed descriptive survey design . The research instruments were questionnaires for headteachers , teachers and students. An observation schedule was also used to observe the resourses. Data for the study was both qualitative and quantitative in nature. Quantitative data was analysed descriptively using frequency counts and percentages. It was presented using frequency tables, bar graphs and pie charts. Qualitative data was thematically analyzed (categorised on related themes) according to the research questions and objectives.There after inferences, conclusions and recommendations were drawn. It was found out that most secondary schools lacked necessary physical and material resources. In budgeting for resourses, the headteachers involved mostly the BOG. It was also found out that students rarely perfomed science practicals and when they did, it was in groups. The headteachers faced many challenges in management of resourses that include lack of enough money to use to obtain and maintain the resourses, and high student enrolment. It was recommended that more funding should be made to schools to ensure that resourses are obtained and maintained for use in schools.en_US
