Factors influencing performance of schools in National examinations Kenya-Mwingi District
The purpose of this study was to identify the factors that influence performance of schools in National Examinations in Kenya - KC.S.E in Mwingi District. The study was prompted by claims from parents, members of public and other beneficiaries of education that KC.S.E results in Mwingi District are not helping candidates compete favorably with those from other Districts for the few job opportunities available in the country. Many schools do not produce students with matriculation grades. The study was done in all the thirty schools of the District. The relevant information for the study was collected from the principal, five teachers and four form four students from each school. Some relevant information was also collected from the District Education Officer (D.RO), Mwingi District. Four types of questionnaires were used to collect information from the four categories of targeted people, that is, the principal, the teachers, the student s and the D.B.O. The study was carried out in form of a simple descriptive survey. The responses to items were edited for completeness of data after which the complete data was organized through frequencies, tables, percentages for the researcher to be able to make conclusions and recommendations. Inadequate number of graduate teachers in the secondary schools in the district, substandard internal evaluation, inadequate revision for exams by the candidates, failure to supervise students revision, low teacher morale/motivation, inadequate learning resources, poor school administration and leadership, inadequate supervision and inspection of schools, low parent contribution to the learning of their children were some of the identified facto affecting performance in secondary schools. In the light of the findings, the researcher recommended that there was need to distribute secondary school teaching facilities to all schools, teachers ought to be dedicated to their duty, there was need to develop the school facilities and learning resources, there was need for effective administration and leadership of the schools while parents should strive to create a conducive learning environment at home. The B.O.G should clearly state their expectations as far as K.C.S.E performance is concerned and follow it up since they are the managers of the schools. They should work in close association with other stakeholders in the school.
