Abstract
The purpose of the study was to identify the attitudes held by primary school teachers towards Social Studies (GHC, a combined course). It was also the purpose of the study to find out whether the teachers’ attitudes were related to their background variables, such as their age, teaching experience, class level, academic and professional qualifications. The problems faced by the teachers were also studied.
The sample consisted of fifty primary school teachers from eight primary schools in Central Division of Machakos District. All the teachers teaching GHC in any of the classes were used.
The teachers responded to a questionnaire, which had a likert-type scale to measure their attitudes. Their response were analyzed and presented in percentages. The chi-square test was used to find out whether there was any relationship between the teachers’ attitudes and their background variables.
The main findings of the study were:
1) The teachers had a positive attitude towards social studies (GHC).
2) The teachers had a positive attitude were not related to their background variables.
3) Teachers indicated that they face some problems in the teaching of GHC.
