dc.description.abstractThis study focuses on the question of attitudes and achievement in the teaching of music. The researcher made an attempt to establish the existence of any relationship between pupils' attitude toward music and their achievement. The study sought to satisfy the following objectives. - Identify pupils' most prevalent attitudes towards Music. - Establish whether pupils' attitudes toward Music were related to their achievement. - Establish the extent to which the attitudes were correlated to achievement. 163 standard seven pupils from four primary schools in Kanduyi division, Bungoma District were involved in this study. They were asked to respond to written statements to register their opinion of feeling about music as a subject. As for the research instruments used, there were two sources of data for this study. First was the Likert type of attitude rating scale made up of 40 statements on Music. Secondly the researcher utilized pupils' scores from their end of year Music assessment. The results of the study revealed that pupil’s most prevalent positive attitudes were centred on the teacher's Methodology or the approach he adopts in his Music teaching. Pupils' most prevalent negative attitudes touched on the teacher's self-concept as well as his attitudes towards them. Ability to play Music instruments also seemed to be an issue that created negative attitude basically because of lack of adequate exposure. The summary of the Study indicates that pupils were generally sensitive to the approach adopted by the Music teacher as well as his self-concept and attitude towards them. The general categorization of pupil’s attitudes, however, showed that the majority were positively inclined towards music. In conclusion, this study revealed that there is a positive correlation between pupils' attitude towards Music and their achievement although not significantly outstanding. The study concludes with a number of recommendations made in relation to future research in Music. It was evident that further research was necessary to establish existence of other variables that seemed to contribute to achievement in Music in addition to attitude.en_US
