Investigating impediments to effective multimedia collection development in university libraries in Kenya

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate on the factors that impede on the collection development and maintenance of multi media information resources in University Libraries in Kenya. The study was a result of the problem in that despite the realization of the importance of multi media information resources as important components in study, teaching and research, print collections have always dominated in libraries. In many cases multi media resources have been poorly developed and hence there is need for a strong academic collection of these resources. The study investigated on core aspects of collection development to include: •Collection development policy •Budget •Staff •Space •Attitudes The findings of the study among others indicated serious shortcomings in these major areas of collection development and it is on this that recommendations have been made to aid in solving the problem that recommendations have been made to aid in solving these problems in University Libraries.
