This study seeks to establish students competence and performance in Kiswahili in selected secondary schools in Nyanza Province (Lake Region) and analyse the reasons for the starling improvement of performance in Kiswahili in national examinations for the last four years (2009-2012). The basis for the study was that schools in the Lake Region have been known to perform poorly in Kiswahili in national examinations. But in the years 2010 and 2011, Maranda High School and Kisumu Girls High School respectively showed improved performance ir. K.:SWJ.,1;]i. This study seeks to explain whether the improvement was coincidental or gradual. Purposive sampling technique W2S used in the four selected schools from four different counties in Luo Nyanza which were; Siaya, Migori, Kisumu and Homa Bay counties. These schools included both national and county schools as well as both boys and girls. The objectives of the study were; to explain different levels of students competence and performance in Kiswahili in secondary schools, to examine the challenges facing the learning of Kiswahili as a second language in Luo Nyanza and to establish the reasons for the improved performance in Kiswahili in Luo Nyanza Schools in national examinations. The study was guided by the theory of generative grammar and the theory of cooperative language leaming. The study incorporeted both field work and library work. Data was collected through questionaires, interviews and collection of the KCSE results from the selected schools. It was analysed through thematic categorisation depending on the research objectives and presented using graphs and tables. The study found out that majority of the students in Luo lyanza Schools showed high level of competence and perfomance in Kiswahili.
