Assessment of teacher factors affecting the implementation of Early Childhood Development and Education Curriculum in Mathira East Sub-County, Nyeri County, Kenya
A Pre-school teacher plays an important role in the implementation of the Early Childhood Education (ECD). Nevertheless, the pre - school teacher experiences many challenges in the process of curriculum implementation. The purpose of the study is to assess the teacher based factors affecting curriculum implementation in public ECDE centres in Mathira East Sub County. The objectives of the study will be: to outline teachers’ qualifications in public pre- schools, to find out if ECDE teachers prepare professional records and to find out if teachers provide a conducive environment for children for curriculum implementation to take place. The study will make use of simple descriptive design and will employ both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The target population will comprise of all the 41 ECDE centres/head teachers and 62 teachers in Mathira East Sub County. A sample of21 (50%) of public pre-schools/ heads and 21 (33.8%) teachers will be selected. Questionnaires and Observation checklist will be used to collect the data their validity as well as reliability will be scrutinised during piloting that will involve four public pre-schools. Specifically, validity will be determined by checking if the research instruments conform to the study objectives while the test retest method will be used to examine reliability of instruments at a coefficient of 0.8. For data analysis, quantitative data will be analysed descriptively using means, percentages with the help of the computer statistical package for social science and results presented in tables, graphs and pie-charts while qualitative data will be organized into common themes and clustered in a patterned order so as to identify variables that depict general concepts and differences. It is hoped that the information gathered will form a basis to address teacher based challenges affecting the smooth implementation of curriculum in ECDE centres in Mathira East Sub County and Kenya at large.
