Resonance Energy Transfer for the Donor-Acceptor Pair Auramine-Omethylene Blue and Sensitization of Singlet Oxygen

Resonance energy transfer between a diarylmethane dye auramine-O and a thiazine dye, methylene blue has been studied in cellulose acetate films. The results show that the rate constant of energy transfer (ket}for this donor-acceptor pair is 2.5 x 1010 L-I mol S-1 with a critical distance, Ro = 38 ±2 A. It is shown from the photodegradation of 2,5-diphenylfuran and physical quenching by 1,4- diazabicycio[2.2.2]octane that the consequence of this indirect excitation of methylene blue in an oxygenated matrix is singlet oxygen production.
