Perceptions of learners with hearing impairments on effects of their academic performance in Eldoret municipality, Uasin Gishu county, Kenya

The purpose of the study is to examine perceptions of learners with hearing impairment (HI) on the effects of their academic performance in Eldoret Municipality, Uasin Gishu County, Kenya. The objective of the study is to determine the performance of learners with HI in given examinable subjects. The study will adopt descriptive research design which intends to examine the learners' perceptions in selected schools and units for HI. After which the study will find out possible ways of improving academic performance. The study will adopt Allport theory (1996). The target population will be 153 learners in all the schools and units for HI in the County. A total of 82 learners with HI from class 4- 8 will form the sample. Out of the five units for HI in Uasin Gishu County, two units will be randomly sampled whereas purposive sampling techniques will be used to earmark the most affected school in academic performance. A questionnaire will be used to collect data. The questionnaire will be piloted in two schools for the deaf in the neighboring Counties, Kapsabet and Hen schools for the deaf. Descriptive and inferential statistics will be used to analyse the data collected with the help of Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS).
