The Determiner Phrase in Dholuo: A Minimalist Perspective .
The proposed study will describe the structure and function of the Determiner Phrase in Dholuo using the Minimalist Program. This study will seek to answer three questions: How is the DP in Dholuo realized structurally? To what extent is the DP in Dholuo analyzable within the MP? What semantic functions does the DP in Dholuo play in a sentence? The data for this study will be elicited through four ways: tape recorded main news bulletin items from two Dholuo radio stations, written compositions from respondents, Dholuo written material and through introspection. The respondents will be selected from a mixed day secondary school in Maranda Division, Siaya County through purposive sampling technique and the sample size will be ten respondents, five males and five females. The data for this study will be in the form of full sentences and DPs and will be analysed qualitatively. The Minimalist Trees will be used to account for these structures where similar structures will be described once. Finally, the semantic functions of the DP will be described in the MP.
