Bananas are important in the Great Lakes region, not only in Uganda, but also in adjacent countries, where they are both a food security and a cash crop (17). Food security studies reveal that in Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi, bananas constitute more than 30% of the daily per capita caloric intake, rising to 60% in some regions (2). Bananas also provide a major source of cash income for the farmers in the Great Lakes region (44).
